It’s that time of year when even the most optimistic among us start quoting Game of Thrones: “Winter is coming.” Winter is coming and honestly, so are my blankets, extra reading time, and those early sunsets.
Here’s this week’s news, events, and updates…
- No major association announcements this week.
- Membership: Friendly reminder: If you haven’t renewed your membership yet, please consider doing so. Our strength lies in our collective readiness and engagement.
- 2026 Conference: We are looking ahead and will soon begin preparations for the annual conference. If you have ideas and want to help shape the theme and agenda, now’s a good time to raise your hand.
- Nonprofit Cybersecurity Survey (UC Berkeley & WaTech): WaTech asked us to help with outreach on a UC Berkeley project. They’re surveying nonprofits across Washington to understand needs and scope new support services. If your EM shop partners with nonprofits (and most of us do), please share the survey with those orgs. Participants receive a $50 virtual gift card (yes, I know…sounds like phishing; it’s legit). Closes November 15. Questions? Contact Shannon Pierson at spierson@berkeley.edu
- Annual State Enhanced Hazard Mitigation Plan Annual Report: This report highlights some recent examples of hazard mitigation and disaster resilience work happening around the state.
· Washington Coastal Hazards Organizational Resilience Team (COHORT) Inaugural Report: This report highlights successes, accomplishments, and metrics for Washington’s Coastal Hazards Organizational Resilience Team (COHORT) during the 2023-25 biennium.
- Hurricane Milton: Social Media Insights in the Eye of the Storm: Hurricane Milton challenged emergency managers across multiple counties. Join WSEMA member Chris Smith on November 19th from 12-1, for a behind-the-scenes look at social media communication during the storm. Platform will be on Teams.
- Have something you’d like me to feature? Send it my way at president@wsema.org by 8:00 a.m. on Fridays. Trainings, news, shoutouts, or anything you think WSEMA should know about!
