WSEMA Weekly Update – May 1, 2026

WSEMA!

We got a stretch of warm weather this week and I reacted the only reasonable way one should, and that was by abandoning all indoor responsibilities. I took a couple days to hang out with the dogs and dive into some much-needed yard work. There’s just something rewarding about the sweat and the process. It kind of feels like meditation for me.

Also, my 10-month-old Malinois learned what stinging nettles are…so, growth all around.

It was a pretty simple week, a little painful, and somehow still exactly what I needed.

Let’s do this!

Association News

  • WSEMA Conference Call for Presentations: I know some really smart people. I know some really amazing emergency managers. I also know that people want to hear what you have to say. SO, submit those presentation ideas!

Emergency Management in Washington

  • FIFA World Cup Planning Highlights: WA State EMD released their May issue of FIFA World Cup planning updates.
  • WA State Healthcare Situational Awareness Brief: Adult and pediatric ED volumes show their typical variability but remain high overall. The number of hospitalized patients with RSV, influenza and COVID remains low, decreasing again this week with fewer than 25 inpatients for each statewide.

National EM Updates and Misc.

  • DHS Shutdown Ends: After 75 days, the DHS shutdown has come to an end. The appropriations bill fully funds DHS, except for ICE and CBP, which will be addressed through the reconciliation process.

The end of the shutdown means: FEMA DRF will be replenished; FEMA-GO will re-open, allowing access to FY25 funds; and work on the FY26 grant NOFOs will commence.

  • FEMA Review Council Scheduled: The FEMA Review Council will meet on May 7, 2026 from 11 am – 12:30 pm.  The meeting will be open virtually to members of the public with advance registration.
  • Wild Stinging Nettle: Some interesting facts and recipes for nettles! I’m not recommending or encouraging you make Nettle Pesto but if you do, let me know how it turns out. Also, make sure you are not allergic.

Training and Resources

  • ICS Courses: Effective April 16, 2026, FEMA has restored access to its Independent Study.
  • WA State Training: Check out trainings happening across the state. To view and register for training, visit the Washington State EMD Training Calendar.

Closing Note

As we head into the weekend, remember to stay hydrated, bodies of water are still cold even when it is hot out, and natural deodorant is not meant for everyone. Stay safe out there!
